How much does a mission cost?
Here’s how paying for a young missionary’s mission works, from the Church’s own handbook.
The monthly contribution
- Young teaching missionaries and their families give a set amount each month to help cover mission costs.
- It goes into the home ward missionary fund. Each month, Church headquarters withdraws it.
- Don’t pay ahead. Extra money given in advance can’t be refunded if a missionary comes home early.

Is it the same everywhere?
- In some countries the amount is equalized: it’s the same for every missionary, no matter where they serve.
- In other countries, the missionary, family, bishop and stake president agree on the amount together.
- Your bishop can tell you the current amount for your family.

If money is hard
The Church says young people who have prepared as well as they can should not be delayed for financial reasons. Extended family and friends can help, and the bishop or stake president may ask ward or stake members to give (General Handbook 24).
In the field
Each month the mission gives young missionaries enough money for healthy food, transportation and other living costs. It’s for mission needs only (General Handbook 24).
Other costs before you go
- Clothing and personal items on your list.
- Pre-mission medical, dental, eye care and immunizations.
- Luggage fees when flying to the Provo MTC.
- Money for personal items. A debit or credit card for emergencies is recommended.
