What Sister missionaries should know
Dress, companions, leaders and safety in one place, from the Church’s guidelines and Missionary Standards.
Sister missionaries are sometimes called “Mormon missionaries.” They serve in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which asks to be called by that full name.
When Sisters can serve
Young women can now start at 18 after high school, and serve 18 months. See serving at 18.
Planning the money side? Young Sisters pay the same $400 a month as Elders.

Dress
- Skirts and dresses cover the knee. Ankle-length is fine; floor-length isn’t.
- Slacks are an option for daily work. In mosquito-prone missions Sisters are encouraged to wear them in the rainy season.
- Wear a dress or skirt to the temple, Sunday meetings, conferences, baptisms and MTC devotionals. You can arrive in slacks and change.
- Flat or low-heeled shoes that suit the climate. No backpacks for daily work.

Companions
- Stay with your companion; you should be able to see and hear each other except in the bathroom or a private interview.
- You share a room, not a bed.
- If you’re ever separated, contact your mission president right away.

Sister training leaders
Two Sisters serve as Sister training leaders over one or more zones. They help train and look after the well-being of the Sisters, take part in training meetings and zone conferences, and go on exchanges with companionships. They’re part of the mission leadership council.

Safety
- Talk to your mission leaders about any safety worry or abuse.
- In an emergency, get to safety or medical care first, then contact your leaders.
- If a companion is abusive, ask your mission president for help.
