Serving a mission at 18 as a young woman

Since 21 November 2025, young women who choose to serve may start at 18 once they’ve finished high school. Here’s what that means in practice.

What changed

The First Presidency announced on 21 November 2025 that young women who want to serve a full-time mission can begin at age 18, as long as they have graduated from high school or its equivalent. The change took effect right away.

A mission is still an optional opportunity for young women. Young men are asked to serve as part of their priesthood duty. Both are welcome, and the Church stresses that the right age to start is a personal, prayerful choice.

When you can apply

  1. Finish high school (or its equivalent).
  2. Talk with your bishop. He starts the interviews and the recommendation.
  3. Submit up to 150 days ahead of your 18th birthday or your availability date.
  4. Leave time for exams. Physician and dentist visits, and any follow-up, can take longer than you expect.

The Church’s mission timing tool also notes that fewer new missionaries start between November and May, which can matter if you’re picking an availability date.

How long Sisters serve

Young women serve 18 months; young men serve 24 months. Starting at 18 doesn’t change the length.

At $400 a month, 18 months comes to $7,200. See what a mission costs for Sisters.

Deciding if it’s right for you

  • Pray about the timing. Some will go at 18, some at 19 or later, and some won’t serve a full-time mission. All are good choices.
  • Think about school and work. See school, scholarships and your mission.
  • Talk with family and leaders. Your parents, bishop and Young Women leaders can help you plan.
  • Read the Sister guide. What Sister missionaries should know covers dress, companions and safety.
