Passport and visa steps
Serving in another country, or training at an MTC abroad? Here’s where to start.
Start early
The Church says applying early gives more time to finish needed medical, dental, passport or visa requirements (Church Newsroom). Missionaries may submit their papers up to 150 days before their availability date.
Find what you need
Your call packet and the Missionary Portal have your travel instructions. Follow them first. Visa steps are different for every country, so we don’t guess here.
Applying for a U.S. passport
U.S. passports are handled by the U.S. State Department. See how to apply for forms, photos, fees and wait times.
Getting to the MTC
- Request travel through the Missionary Travel section of the portal. If you don’t, Missionary Travel will assume you’re making your own way to the Provo MTC.
- Questions? Church Travel: 1-800-537-3537.
- Bring a government photo ID, like a driver’s license or passport. Airports require it.
- You pay your own luggage fees to fly to the Provo MTC.
